Fraxel Gets FDA Clearance to Treat Age Spots

Fraxel logoThe laser skin resurfacing treatment Fraxel re:store Dual has received FDA clearance to treat actinic keratosis (AK), also known as sun or precancerous spots.

Results of a six-month study of 21 patients with AK helped the FDA reach the decision. Each of the patients received a series of two to four laser treatments, spaced two to four weeks apart. Results of the study revealed that the treatment yielded a mean 83.5 percent decrease in age spot lesions on the face and other areas of the body, including the arms, hands and chest. Skin texture and pigmentation improvements were also reported.

“In our study, we found the Fraxel re:store Dual to be the most effective treatment of multiple facial AKs, as it is safe and requires minimal downtime while simultaneously improving other signs of photodamage,” said Dr. Roy G. Geronemus, director of the Laser and Skin Surgery Center of New York. “While the 83.5 percent removal rate was comparable to other topical therapies and AK treatment options, Fraxel was overwhelmingly well-tolerated by all the patients and offers the added benefit of improving a patients’ overall skin quality, color and texture.”

The FDA has also cleared Fraxel re:store for skin resurfacing, eye wrinkles, acne scars, surgical scars, and skin discoloration and pigmented lesions, such as age spots and sun spots.

Dr. Lo is the only practitioner in Tucson, Arizona to offer treatment with Fraxel Repair. The Fraxel Repair laser can provide patients with smoother, tighter skin; reduced wrinkles and fine lines; improved tone and texture; and softening of deep frown lines. After the procedure, the skin will have some swelling and redness that will gradually subside in the following days; recovery time is usually one to two weeks. After about seven days, the patient should see fresh new skin emerging.
