BOTOX® is a purified protein that
reduces muscle contractions temporarily. BOTOX® has been
used in medicine for over 20 years to treat blepharospasm
(eyelid spasm) and facial spasm. It is also used to treat
migraine headaches and excessive sweating.
More recently, BOTOX® has been used
for cosmetic reasons to reduce wrinkles in the forehead, eyelid,
and lip areas. BOTOX® is FDA approved for treatment of wrinkles
in the glabella (area between the eyebrows). Dr. Lo not only
injects in these common areas but also can tailor the BOTOX®
injections to give a brow lift, to reduce wrinkles around
the lips, or to reduce the muscle bands in the neck. The injections
usually last 2-4 months and then need to be repeated as the
BOTOX® effect wears off.
Procedure Description
BOTOX® injections
can be done with or without numbing medications. A very
small amount of the BOTOX® protein is placed through
a tiny needle. There is slight discomfort with placing the
BOTOX® but there is no recovery time needed. The procedure
takes just a few minutes, and the patient can return to work
immediately without any signs of having had the procedure
done. Occasionally, a patient will experience some bruising.
Additional
Information
As one of the most experienced
doctors in Tucson with BOTOX®, Dr. Lo has performed thousands
of BOTOX® injections over the last 10 years, even before BOTOX®
was being used for cosmetic purposes. If the patient has blepharospasm
or facial spasm and needs BOTOX®, insurance will cover
the procedure with the necessary authorizations.
Concurrent Procedures
BOTOX® is usually done by itself or sometimes before
certain procedures, such as the Russian
threads.
