Liposuction is the surgical removal of excess fat from specific areas of the body. It is used to slim the hips, thighs, abdomen, and neck areas. It can also be used to contour the fat around the ankles and hips. The best liposuction candidate is someone who has a relatively normal weight but has isolated pockets of fat that have not responded to dieting or exercise. Liposuction can be done at almost any age if the patient is in good health and has good elasticity of the skin. Dr. Lo is extremely proficient in liposuction and has performed upwards of 600 liposuction procedures in his career. Before and after liposuction photos

Procedure Description

The tumescent technique, a revolutionary technique developed by a dermatologist in the late 1980's, has made liposuction much safer. In the tumescent technique, a solution is infused into the fat, which both numbs the area and minimizes bleeding. After the solution is infused, liposuction is performed in the desired area to remove the fat. An elastic compression garment is worn over the treated area for several days to weeks following the procedure in order to reduce the bruising and swelling. The procedure is done on an outpatient basis under local anesthesia. The duration of the procedure is dependent on the number of sites that are suctioned. There is minimal pain and the patient can usually return to work in less than one week.

Additional Information

•  The removal of fat is usually permanent as long as the patient does not gain any weight post operatively.
•  Liposuction is not a substitute for weight loss. If a patient is significantly overweight, Dr. Lo usually advises them to lose weight prior to having liposuction.
•  Liposuction does not improve cellulite, although Mesotherapy can in certain cases.
•  The results of liposuction will vary in individuals as healing, skin elasticity, and water retention is different.

Concurrent Procedures

Liposuction is usually done as a solitary procedure for safety reasons. The exception is neck liposuction, which can be done in conjunction with a face lift.
