BOTOX® Basics

BOTOX® is a quick injection which temporarily reduces muscle activity resulting in the smoothing of fine lines and wrinkles. Since 2002, BOTOX® has been an FDA approved cosmetic form of Botulinum toxin A that is injected into the muscles to temporarily relax the muscle contractions which cause wrinkles and lines to form. This temporary reduction in the muscle activity prevents facial lines and wrinkles from forming by relaxing the muscle movement caused by smiling, frowning, raising your brows, and squinting.

BOTOX® treatments are quick, safe, and effective and take less than 30-minutes. Your injector will consult with you prior to your treatment to determine your goals and how many units of BOTOX® will be needed in each area. The injections are made with tiny needles directly into the facial muscles so treatments are typically not painful, but you may experience a slight pinching feeling at the injection site. Topical numbing cream can be used for additional patient comfort.

There is no downtime with BOTOX®, and you may resume normal activity after treatment, just avoid putting pressure on the treatment area. Results can be seen within 7-14 days although most people notice the effects within the first week. BOTOX® results typically last up to 3-4 months depending on your individual metabolism. Dr. Lo has been injecting BOTOX® for 20+ years and has trained his injectors at About Faces Cosmetic Surgery and Med Spa in his skilled technique.

BOTOX® is customized to your goals and needs so it can be different for everyone. When you meet with your injector at About Faces Cosmetic Surgery and Med Spa, they will determine the appropriate treatment for the areas you want to address. BOTOX® is adminstered in units and the number of units per injection is determined by your injector. Typically the forehead area with will have five injections into the muscle, the frown lines between the brows can have 5 to 7 injections into the muscles between your brows and in your forehead, and the crow's feet area around the eyes with have 3 injections (on each side) in the muscle that frames the eye.

Dysport®
Smooth, Soften, and Still Look Like You
Dysport® is a fast-acting, FDA-approved injectable treatment that targets moderate to severe frown lines between the eyebrows (glabellar lines). Just Like BOTOX®, it also uses botulinum toxin type A to temporarily relax facial muscles—but with a slightly different formulation.
How It Works: Dysport® spreads a bit more easily than BOTOX®, making it a great option for treating larger areas or patients with moderate-to-severe expression lines.
How Long It Lasts: Results typically appear in 2–3 days and last up to 4–5 months.
What Makes It Different: Dysport® may kick in a little faster than BOTOX® and may offer a softer, more natural look in areas that require broader diffusion. It’s often chosen by patients who want quick results and a subtle finish.
Xeomin
Pure, Precise, and Preservative-Free
Xeomin is a highly purified wrinkle relaxer that contains no accessory proteins—just the active ingredient (botulinum toxin type A). It’s FDA-approved to improve the appearance of frown lines and is often referred to as the “naked injectable.”
How It Works: Xeomin blocks the signals from nerves to muscles, temporarily reducing muscle movement and softening the appearance of dynamic wrinkles.
How Long It Lasts: Results typically begin to show within 3–4 days, with effects lasting around 3–4 months.
What Makes It Different: Unlike BOTOX® and Dysport®, Xeomin is free from complexing proteins. This may reduce the risk of developing resistance over time, making it a great choice for long-term wrinkle management.
Letybo
The Newest FDA-Approved Wrinkle Relaxer
Letybo is the latest botulinum toxin injectable to receive FDA approval in the U.S. Already popular in South Korea and other global markets, Letybo is making waves for its smooth consistency and natural-looking results.
How It Works: Letybo works similarly to other neuromodulators by temporarily relaxing the facial muscles that cause wrinkles, particularly in the upper face.
How Long It Lasts: Initial results may be seen as early as 3 days, with full results in about 1–2 weeks. Results generally last 3–4 months.
What Makes It Different: Patients report a silky-smooth injection experience and subtle, refined results. As a newer product, it’s a great alternative for those looking to try the latest innovation in wrinkle relaxers.

When should I start wrinkle relaxers?
