Botox Basics

Botox is a quick injection which temporarily reduces muscle activity resulting in the smoothing of fine lines and wrinkles. Since 2002, Botox has been an FDA approved cosmetic form of Botulinum toxin A that is injected into the muscles to temporarily relax the muscle contractions which cause wrinkles and lines to form. This temporary reduction in the muscle activity prevents facial lines and wrinkles from forming by relaxing the muscle movement caused by smiling, frowning, raising your brows, and squinting.
Botox treatments are quick, safe, and effective and take less than 30-minutes. Your injector will consult with you prior to your treatment to determine your goals and how many units of Botox will be needed in each area. The injections are made with tiny needles directly into the facial muscles so treatments are typically not painful, but you may experience a slight pinching feeling at the injection site. Topical numbing cream can be used for additional patient comfort.
There is no downtime with Botox, and you may resume normal activity after treatment, just avoid putting pressure on the treatment area. Results can be seen within 7-14 days although most people notice the effects within the first week. Botox results typically last up to 3-4 months depending on your individual metabolism. Botox is customized to your goals and needs so it can be different for everyone. When you meet with your injector at About Faces Cosmetic Surgery and Med Spa, they will determine the appropriate treatment for the areas you want to address. Botox is adminstered in units and the number of units per injection is determined by your injector. Typically the forehead area with will have five injections into the muscle, the frown lines between the brows can have 5 to 7 injections into the muscles between your brows and in your forehead, and the crow's feet area around the eyes with have 3 injections (on each side) in the muscle that frames the eye.

When should I start Botox?

Everyone ages differently, and the severity of your lines and wrinkles determine when you might be ready to start your Botox treatments. For some, this can start earlier due to a combination of factors such as genetics, exposure to the sun and environment, and loss of collagen. As we age, we notice lines and wrinkles around the eyes, on the forehead and between the brows become more visible. While most people assume Botox is for older men and women, it’s no longer exclusively for correction.
